The IGU Executive Committee has learned belatedly of a high honor conferred in June on IGU Vice President Qin Dahe of China-Beijing. The details below are from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) press release dated 26 June 2008.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) honours scientists for their accomplishments in meteorology and related sciences. Dr QIN Dahe from China won the prestigious IMO Prize this year for his scientific research and for promoting international cooperation in meteorology.
At each of its annual sessions, the WMO Executive Council confers awards and prizes aimed at rewarding outstanding contributions to the advancement of meteorology and hydrology, as well as encouraging young scientists active in those fields.
The IMO Prize, the highest WMO award, originates from WMO's predecessor, the International Meteorological Organization (IMO), founded in 1873. Its 2008 laureate is Dr QIN Dahe from China, for his achievements in cryosphere and climate research, his involvement in the preparation of IPCC Scientific Assessments Reports, and his contribution to meteorological services at the national and at the international levels. Dr Qin is an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and of the Third World Academy of Sciences. He is the former Administrator of the China Meteorological Administration and the former Permanent Representative of China with the WMO.
